‘So, what do you do?’

It’s one of the first questions we ask when we meet someone new. And then we base much of our view of them, and where they fit into the world, on the answer. You’re a web designer? Must be a hipster. A developer? Got to be a geek. A banker? A suit. 

A better question might be: ‘Who are you?’ And then the person gets to give an answer that tells you a bit about them, and what makes them tick.  

At Spot, it’s one of our favourite questions. Who are we? Glad you asked. We’re a straight-talking, 100% South African start-up. We’re ordinary people who’re tired of hustling every month to make it to payday smiling. We care. That’s why we challenge the norm, because to us there’s no such thing.  

We’re all about purpose. We believe that everyone should have one. Or at least be on the journey to find it. Because when you know your purpose, your life has more meaning. It’s your ‘why’. It means you live each day to the fullest, because you know who you are. You know where you’re from, and you’re proud of it.   

Like most South Africans, everyone in our team is over of the old ways of banking and battling with their money. So our purpose is simple: to give you back control of your money, and to give you real choices on what to do with it. (Cue confetti cannon). We’re here to help take the hassle out of your hustle. We want you to spend less time banking and more time living. That’s what makes us get out of bed in the morning. That’s our ‘why’. 

To make it easy for you to manage your money, we’ve created an open banking marketplace – in other words, a platform that’s bank-neutral, which means we can partner with an endless range of financial service providers to give you the choice, control and personalisation you need in your finances. 

The real magic we seek is choice. Customised offerings that actually add value. We’re not interested in ‘a slightly better deal’ on our car insurance. Or having a bank tweak a standard loan product and calling it ‘a tailored offer’. We want to give you offers based on your lifestyle, your behaviour, and your budget.  

People often talk about fintech companies being disruptors. We prefer to think of ourselves as being passionate about using technology to make a difference to people’s lives. 

Change is here. We’re entering a world of exciting, liberating money management. All the control, choice, and security. None of the red tape. We’ve got the milkshake. We’re hoping it will bring you to our yard.
