How to holiday with friends (and stay friends).
5 min read
Planning a holiday with friends sound like hard work? This blog is for you.
A weekend away requires planning. Many different opinions on how to get there. Where to stay. What to eat. And of course, there’s the big one: how you’re going to split the expenses. All of this can make that much-needed R&R mega-stressy.
Maybe it’s because we all bring home different amounts of bacon. Maybe your friends live a little more than you do. One thing’s for sure, the old way of splitting expenses was hard work. Track what you’ve spent. What you owe. Divide the bill. Send your banking details. Wait 3 days for it to clear. Nudge your friend for payment. Awks.
Say hello to Spot’s Shared Accounts. Everyone has access to the money. Everyone gets to track what’s being spent, and by who. In real-time.
Here are our top 3 tips for holidaying with friends (and staying friends):
Sit down before you take-off.
Before you hit the road, make sure your friends are using the Spot app, so you can set up a Shared Account (you can add up to 10 peeps). Next, it’s time to chat about the budget. Friends can top up the Shared Account wallet with Ozow Instant EFT, a linked bank card or a normal EFT. Bonus? Shared Accounts have no monthly account fees.
Leave the extra baggage behind.
All transactions are tracked in real-time. This means you get to keep track of how much you’re spending. You can use the Spot app to scan-to-pay QR codes, or tap physical Spot card to pay for stuff like groceries or eating out (plus you don’t pay for card swipes!). And yeah, you can see who’s spent more money at the beach bar. Not that anyone’s keeping tabs 😉.
Let your hair down.
You’ve worked hard for your money. So let your hair down and leave the security to us. Spot requires a secret PIN to confirm and process QR code payments. When a Shared Account is created, the owner of the account needs to share the PIN with members of the account. Without the PIN, no QR code payments can be made.
If there’s a transaction, you’re not sure of, and the person who made it isn’t either, you can dispute the transaction in the Spot app. Our team will look into it for you.
We all wanna hear less beach’n about money. Make those plans. Use the Spot app to manage your group holiday expenses.
Here’s how you set up a Shared Account:
- Sign into your Spot app.
- On the home screen, swipe left until you get to the option to ‘Add a New Account’, give your shared account a name and hit ‘Save’.
- Create a pin number for the account and you’re done!
- Once the account is created, click on Account settings to share the account
- Choose the person you want to invite from your Friends on Spot list, or enter their phone number in the search field, and tap Next.
- We’ll send them an in-app message to let them know you’ve shared your account with them. And we’ll let you know when they accept.
Heads up: You can only share accounts with people who have successfully signed up and verified on the Spot app.
