How to Holiday on a Budget
5 min read
Getaway. Holiday. Weekend away. Drive away, fly away, go away. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect break, so you can lock the front door and go be somewhere else for a while. Recharge your battery, wake up in a new place and see and eat new things.
When looking for a break, we’re all looking for something different, we all want to spend as little as possible to get as much as possible, and when we get there, there must have everything we want and nothing we don’t.
What are you looking for?
For some, pitching a tent in a campsite is the best thing, while for others porcelain en-suite is not negotiable. If you have children and a tight budget, self-catering may be the best option, because cooking for a crowd is much cheaper than eating out.
A romantic weekend could mean a lodge somewhere, or a hotel, or a yacht. But a girls’ weekend may require booking out a whole house with a pool and Instagram views.
It is called getting bang for your buck. You need to know exactly what it will cost you to get where you want to go and stay there for the time you have for your precious getaway. When calculating travel costs, you would do well to compare the cost of flying to driving. Many of us only calculate the cost of petrol, but forget to add toll fees and what your car cost to drive per kilometre.
The thing about people selling accommodation is that it has a one-day sell-by date. An empty room on Thursday can never be sold again. A place that will go for thousands per night over Christmas or Easter weekend may well go for hundreds the rest of the time. Ask for a quote. Is that your best price? You are not being cheap; you are simply finding what the price is for that specific venue at that specific time.
What do you want and what not?
If you go to the same place every year, you know what you will get. If you like to try someplace new every time, you want to know that what you want will be there. It is summer and you want a swimming pool, winter and you want a fireplace.
Think of what you like to do. Are you a bookworm by day and a Netflixer after dark? You will need a comfy chair on a sunny patio and strong Wi-Fi for later. Are you a sports fan? Then DStv is a must – if not in your room, then in a pub or Lapa nearby. If you are taking the kids, you want a place with a pool or a safe boating river, or a playground to keep them busy.
When choosing your destination, there are so many options. Some things may be nice to have – a gym or a hot tub to lounge in, a good restaurant nearby, while other things, like a safe place to park your car, are indispensable.
If any of the amenities you want is not there, you most likely won’t enjoy your stay as much as you would want to. But how do you make sure your rare and precious holiday is perfect in every way?
